The Model Village

Feel like a giant in 1940’s West Cork! The historic railway line and towns are portrayed in delightful miniature.

Model Village

Did you know that the West Cork Model Railway Village is Ireland’s only Model Village?

It depicts the towns of Clonakilty, Kinsale, Bandon and Dunmanway in a scale of 1:24.

All the miniature buildings on display are built on site by staff and are exact replicas of the buildings as they appeared in the 1940’s. The models are made from resin and fibreglass, which are hard wearing substances which can withstand the Irish weather!

Hours of research and background work went into the making of each model back in the 1990’s. First the actual building was surveyed by architects and scaled drawings were produced. Photographs and historical literature from 1930 to 1950 were examined. Plans were then drawn up and the model makers crafted a miniature of each building. There are storyboards with historical information on the buildings on display throughout the Model Village.

Due to the fragile nature of the model buildings there is a constant maintenance programme running throughout the year so if you spot a missing building it’s just in the workshop getting some repairs and will be back on display again shortly.
